Theres an emerging crisis in cis masculinity, as more women are empowered to choose to work and men struggle to find jobs that pay more than their female partners. We’re certainly seeing relationships change in many societies where the traditional women’s role of being in charge of the household is increasingly shared or taken over by male counterparts. It seems to me with the high demand for day care and domestic workers, it is the family realm that is being sacrificed — after all for many people you need two incomes to maintain a middle class family.

To me it is actually societal consciousness about LGBTQ that ages terms like career woman or girl boss. Rather, feminism means freedom to choose. I have friends who identify as career women and others who are happy to be full time mums. These identities are transient, because at other times in our lives we identify more strongly with other lables. Therefore, I can agree with you that more neutral terms would help people find ways to express their roles — as men enter female roles and vice versa. However, with the crisis in masculinity we may need to create some new terms for ‘trophy husband’/ ‘stay at home dad’etc to normalise the transition because sex still matters- especially in populist politics.
