When I was younger living in a racially divided country I used to think of myself as a social chameleon because I would just pick up mannerisms and roll with the flow — I think a much nicer concept than token. Of course you’ll always have people questioning where you belong and it caused me a lot if agony not fitting into some group. I drew inspiration from afrocentrism that I included in a post in the same publication because even Africans are under pressure to define their Africaness. I mean besides being yellow, brown or white African — even black Africans are pressured to answer what makes them black enough if they speak English well, are well educated, have money etc. In the end everyone has multiple identities, some of which are transient. I’m glad I’ve finally grown up and more concerned with being me and doing what’s right than anything else. AC DC is a pretty cool way to have figured it out for youself!
